    Overview

    The Mutriku Wave Power Plant was commissioned as an Oscillating Water Column-based power plant to supply energy to the power grid. As a test site, it has been designed to allow testing and demonstration of PTO systems and, in particular:
    • air turbines;
    • air valves;
    • power generators & converters;
    • control strategies;
    • energy storage & power quality equipment;
    • sensors;
    • other ancillary equipment.
    The Mutriku test site has all the necessary licenses for conducting tests.
    To ensure suitable levels of safety for personnel and the environment, certain minimum technical requirements must be met. These are set out in the BiMEP Installation Guide.

    Infrastructure

    • air chamber attached to the breakwater. Dimensions: 4.5 m wide; 3.1 m long; 9.7 m above mean low water springs (MLWS);
    • circular opening of 750 mm diameter connecting the air chamber to the turbine;
    • butterfly-type damper at chamber outlet for airflow regulation and chamber closure;
    • on-site available equipment (if required):
    • Wells turbine;
    • 18.5 kW/460 V induction generator;
    • back-to-back power converter (90 kW/690 V);
    • measurement & control PLC;
    • fresh water inlet;
    • connection to local distribution grid through a 400 kVA/13.2 kV transformer;
    • 6 m2 office space with Internet connection;
    • easy road access to the facility.

    Equipment available to support site deployments

    In addition to the equipment listed above:
    • available data from sensors: water level and pressure in the chamber.
