    Overview

PLOCAN manages a 23 km2 offshore test site for a wide range of marine technologies, with access to a unique ecosystem, to accelerate the understanding, sustainability, and responsible use of the marine environment in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It enables and contributes to accelerating the development of technologies and knowledge in the marine environment, with deep-sea observation systems in real conditions.
The test site is equipped with an electrical and communications infrastructure, consisting of two medium-voltage (5MW each) submarine cables, for connecting technologies that use natural resources to generate electricity. These cables supply the generated energy to the island’s power grid.

    Infrastructure

Grid connection: PLOCAN has currently two 13.2KV 5 MW submarine electric and communication cables. The total capacity of the node is 15 MW. A smart grid is being installed at the PLOCAN offshore platform that will allow the connection of up to 4 prototypes (400V/250kW each). A new 20 KV-5 MW submarine electrical and communication cable is planned for 2021 for the consumption and evacuation of the electricity generated offshore.
The onshore facilities consist of 400 m2 of workshop space equipped for electronics and mechanical integration, repairs, storage and logistics as well as office space. Laboratories include a wet laboratory with saltwater tank, control room for the piloting of marine vehicles and related matters, in addition to spaces of support to the scientific activity.
CDTIC - ICT Demonstration Centre: With desktop and portable computers, a demonstration room with projection equipment, satellite communications system, radio, and a work room with a digital whiteboard and a projector with connection to servers, for demonstrations, among others.
Technical module: Preparation, adaptation and preliminary tests of different elements for testing and measurements at sea (e.g. marine renewables, meteo-oceanographic buoys, sensors, moorings, etc.). It is also available for training purposes.
Pontoon and Access to confined water area at Taliarte Harbour: Pontoon 60 metres (L) x 4 metres (W), and confined waters for testing unique scientific-technical elements, element prior its installation in the open sea or those that are not yet sufficiently developed to be installed.
Boats: There are two boats available to provide logistical support for operations at sea:
    • PLOCAN 1 – 12m fibre boat with capacity for 12 people. Maximum speed: 45 knots.
    • PLOCAN 2 – 5m semi-rigid boat with capacity for 5 people. Maximum speed: 40 knots.
